THE SPACE FOUNDATION

(Colorado Springs, CO | Washington, D.C.)

Chief Executive Officer

(Top Person in Management)

1998 – 2016

Recruited as Executive Vice President to help turn around and reinvent this U.S.-based, international not-for-profit organization serving the $300 billion global space industry.  Promoted in 2001 [after national search by board of directors] to President & Chief Executive Officer, and later to permanent member of the board.

Led the rebranding and reinvention of what is now The Space Foundation, from a small, single-office “mom and pop” organization operating in the red, into a strong financial performer and the leading non-profit brand in the $330 billion global space industry.  Reinvented the Space Foundation, transforming it into a globally relevant, mission focused, hybrid operating foundation and non-governmental organization.  Transformed its boutique National Space Symposium into the largest and most important gathering of the space industry anywhere in the world.  Launched significant new business lines: government affairs, research and analysis, education, international affairs and the recently opened Space Foundation Discovery Center museum, featuring the Northrup Grumman Science Center, Science on a Sphere®, the El Pomar Space Gallery, the Lockheed Martin Space Education Center and the Jasper D. Ackerman Conference Center.

In the international arena, selected accomplishments include leading the first informal/unofficial U.S. mission to China focused on space exploration, and stewarding ongoing U.S.-China dialogue on space cooperation; providing U.S. testimony to the Parliament of the United Kingdom; managing the Space Foundation role as a permanent member of the U.S. Delegation to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space; leadership of bi-lateral dialogues between space leaders in the U.S. and Germany, Mexico, Poland, Viet Nam, South Korea and the Netherlands; international working relationships with the International Space University, Strasbourg, France; the Royal United Services Institute, London, UK; the China Society of Astronautics, Beijing, among others.

As chief executive, transformed the Space Foundation from a $1.8 million (revenues) and zero (assets) organization to a $10 million (revenues) and $10 million (assets) organization, independently audited to the highest standards for more than 15 consecutive years. In 2012, 2014 and 2016 the Non-Profit Times named the Space Foundation one of the Top 20 Non-Profit Organizations in the U.S. to Work For.

Selected honors: recipient of the U.S. Air Force Distinguished Public Service award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Air Force; recipient of the Public Relations Society of America Silver Anvil Award, the professional society’s highest honor; recipient of the RNASA Foundation’s Space Communicator Award, a rare honor shared with Walter Cronkite and Neil deGrasse Tyson.  More than 30 other executive awards.
